Eye-Connect Provides Access To Specialist Care

Portland people who suffer eye injuries will have ready access to specialist care with the introduction of new world-first technology at Portland District Health.

A new eyeConnect device introduced at PDH's urgent care centre will connect patients who have eye injuries or acute conditions to specialists at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital without having to travel to Melbourne.

eyeConnect was developed by the Eye and Ear and local medical technology manufacturer Ingeneus, with funding from the Victorian Government.

PDH urgent care centre nursing unit manager Deb Tozer said the technology would be helpful for local patients and for nursing staff and doctors.

It gives our doctors and nursing staff the ability to get expert advice while the patient is still in the department and it will save people the trouble of having to travel to Melbourne for specialist care, Ms Tozer said.

eyeConnect connects to PDH’s Telehealth video conferencing system. It collects patient data, visual information and images of the eye which are sent to the Eye and Ear emergency department for review by a specialist doctor to determine if the patient can be managed locally or should be transferred.

Where clinically indicated, eyeConnect will allow more patients to be treated locally and supports clinicians in local emergency settings where there are limited ophthalmology services.

The information is also kept for future review and comparison.

Last financial year PDH’s urgent care centre treated 145 people with eye injuries and problems.

This is another piece of technology introduced at PDH to help patients avoid travelling long distances unnecessarily,” Ms Tozer added. It is a great example of embracing technology and collaborating with other health providers.
