New Board Director Giving Back To The Community

Portland District Health’s newest Board of Management member, Professor Michael Bailey, adds a statistical point of view to the organisation.

Professor Bailey is head statistician for the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre at Monash University and has been a biostatistician for more than 20 years.

He has a diverse background in medical data associated with hospitals, including more than a decade as principal statistician for the Alfred Hospital and more recently working in the area of intensive care data.

Now working remotely from his home base in Portland, Professor Bailey is giving back to the community he loves by joining the PDH Board.

My wife Rochelle and I grew up in Portland and our parents live here. I had been in Melbourne for 20 years but we believed Portland would be a much better place for our kids to grow up and have a relationship with their grandparents, he said.

Professor Bailey also missed the community feel of living in the country.I never felt a sense of community in Melbourne but did when I moved back to Portland and wanted to make a contribution to that community, he said.

I've been on the YMCA Board for about five years and thought my background in medical statistics may be of benefit to the health service.

After a few months in the role, Professor Bailey said he was enjoying the challenge and was impressed with PDH's services and commitment to the local community. It's a lot of work but it's interesting and I enjoy it, he said.

Like most rural health services, PDH’s principal issue is funding.

The funding model seems to change every year and there's no way Portland can guarantee it will meet the goals set for the number of patients, he said.

The number of people who go to hospital on an annual basis is out of our control.
