PDH To Host Health Care Forum

Tuesday, 10 July 2018
Portland people can learn about My Health Record, advanced care planning, organ donation and prescription medicine misuse at forums on July 18.

Portland District Health is hosting two forums at 1.30pm and 7.30pm that will encourage people to actively participate in their health care planning.

At the forums PDH director of health informatics, Claire Holt, will explain the benefits of adding information to My Health Record and the options available to people.

My Health Record is an online summary of an individual's key health information. It will bring together health information such as medical conditions, medicines, allergies and test results in one place. Individuals can choose to share their information with the healthcare providers involved in their care. By allowing them to upload, view and share documents in their My Health Record, providers will have a more detailed picture to make decisions, diagnose and provide treatment.

It's definitely a good idea to not only have a My Health Record but to add information such as emergency contacts, medication details, advanced care planning and organ donation wishes, Ms Holt said.

We're encouraging people to activate and understand the benefits. For example, if advanced care plans are on your My Health Record and something happens, health services will know your final wishes.

Portland District Health is already uploading discharge summaries to My Health Record and by the end of the year expects pathology and radiology results to be automatically included.

People will have the option to opt out of My Health Record between July 16 and October 15. By October 15, if you haven’t opted out, your record will be automatically generated.

The PDH forums will provide information about options, privacy and security, how to actively manage your record and why people should actively use it.

PDH is hosting the forums with support from both local Rotary clubs and United Way Glenelg.

The western Victoria Primary Health Network and Script Wise, specialists in prescription misuse and the My Health Record, will also be involved in the forums which will provide details on advanced care planning and organ donation options.

People can visit www.myhealthrecord.gov.au for more details.
