Portland District Health’s new education manager Tracey Brighton understands how education provides the framework for top quality care.

Ms Brighton has a long history of involvement with health-related education and is keen to ensure PDH has the best education practices in place to ensure it offers a safe and professional service.

It's all about improving practice and developing learning frameworks which leads to better care, she said.

Ms Brighton spent 16 years with Deakin University in Geelong and Warrnambool as an education designer and developer and for the past five years she was the e-learning coordinator and information systems officer for the South West Alliance of Rural Health (SWARH) network based in Warrnambool.

Prior to her role with Deakin she was involved in publishing.

When the internet came along, it changed the paradigm of distance education, I developed skills in online learning when seconded to the Deakin Learning Systems Group to help implement and train professional staff in the use of the university's first learning management systems, she said.

Part of her implementation role was to migrate 40 courses into the online environment.

That's how her education journey started, but it was far from finished.  Ms Brighton continued to build her education and training skills which led to a Masters in Professional Education and Training.

The new role at PDH is an appealing challenge for Ms Brighton.

I'd like to utilise my skills and knowledge and see what value I can bring to Portland District Health and the community as a whole, she said.

Portland District Health places strong emphasis on having a highly qualified staff that continues their professional development and maintain up-to-date skills.

Ms Brighton leads a five-member team in the education department.
